User Evaluation of a Combo Blood Glucose Meter & Dose Calculator
Combining the functionality of an in-vitro blood glucose meter and an insulin calculator, this device has a number of touch points by both patient and health care provider stakeholders.

Three user experience studies were conducted to understand the various interactions these users will have with the product as well as any potential use-errors that may be attributed to the device design and/or supporting documentation.
Participants
Health care providers simulated the activation of the titration regimen, and navigated the various patient history screens which would be reviewed prior to authorizing the dose change.
Patients with experience in diabetes management were tested to assess how well they would understand the primary functions and features of the device.
Methods
The results of our observations during testing, as well as measuring the ability of the participants to complete tasks successfully, allowed an evaluation of workflow, iconography, feedback, missing features, and the efficacy of the training instructions.
Participants reviewed the screens in response to questions posed by the research moderator. For each the questions posted, there was a “right” answer. It was the goal of this study portion, to identify how well participants could: a.) find the appropriate screen and b.) find the right information based on that screen(s). Here are some sample tasks:
Output
Extensive recommendations were provided outlining how to improve the usability of the interface, language and design of each screen/feature. Additional feedback was given on the instructions for use (IFU) and training.
